Spiritual Formation
Spiritual Formation
Growing, developing and deepening our spiritual lives is vital for
all Christians. People encounter and respond to the initiative of God indifferent
ways and by different avenues.

Resources from the Larger Community of Faiths
“As an autonomous Baptist church, we value our heritage and the freedom
it allows us to minister alongside other groups, both Christian and non-Christian.
We express our love for all in gratitude for the love God has shown to us.” *
Many groups and organizations outside this church sponsor activities and programs
that exemplify these ideals. We have listed a few of them here, including from
each a brief statement of its purpose and a link to its Web site.

Statement of First Baptist Church, Greenville
The Anchorage
Just as a boat rests on top of quiet waters secure in its moorings, yearning souls
find a place to listen for God’s still, small voice. The Anchorage offers
retreats, prayerful study groups, guided solitary retreats, and spiritual direction
for clergy and laity, women and men, individuals and groups.
The metaphor of a quiet harbor as a place to anchor deep in still waters, away
from the wind and waves describes us well. Let that image fill your mind. Open
your hands on your lap, take a deep breath, and let it out slowly, remembering
God’s love and care for you. As you turn your face to God, know that God’s
face is already turned toward you in love.
You are warmly invited to ‘come away’ to a safe harbor, for a retreat
or book study, or for spiritual direction. Be in touch as God leads. Contact The
Anchorage, 864-297-5308.

Outreach of Greater Greenville
Centering
Prayer is a practice of being silently open to God’s
loving presence in the midst of our busy and scattered lives. The practice
suggests spending
20 minutes once or twice a day in quiet solitude with God. An open group
meets at First Baptist for an hour each Tuesday at noon in Room E-338 for dialogue,
reflection and a time of group Centering Prayer. Anyone interested in learning
more
about
the practice is invited to call Sula Hurley at 250-8484 and is welcome to
meet with the
group at any time. Contact Michelle McClendon,
370-2522 ext. 126 for more information.
NEXUS Center
What began as an affiliation between First Baptist Church Greenville, Duke
University Divinity School and The Lilly Center for Theological Exploration of Vocation
at
Furman University to offer seminars and retreats for people seeking to connect
their faith to their everyday life, has transformed into a new spiritual organization
dedicated to Cultivating Spiritual Transformation. NEXUS Center is positioned
to offer a broad array of inspirational speakers, workshops and retreats that address
the integration of the heart, mind, soul and body. NEXUS
invites people and organizations of all faith traditions to participate and partner
in our offerings, and to share spiritual wisdom, practices and questions.
