Duke Divinity School

Baptist House of Studies

The Baptist House of Studies is an organization of Baptist students enrolled in Duke Divinity School in Durham, NC. It is the oldest of the alternative programs created in response to the take-over of Southern Baptist seminaries in the 1980s. Baptist House has as its purpose the provision of fellowship among Baptist students as well as the provision of courses in Baptist History and Theology. Of course, Baptist House continues to serve as a contact between students and churches looking for pastors and staff.

Duke Divinity School, a United Methodist seminary with an ecumenical orientation, had fewer than 10 Baptist students when Baptist House came into existence in 1988. Baptists were welcomed with open arms and now there are more than 100 Baptist students who have been accepted in the highly competitive MDiv, MTS, ThM and PhD programs at Duke. Graduates of Duke are now serving as pastors and professors throughout the South. For several years, Duke Divinity students have served as summer interns at FBC Greenville.

FBC Greenville has long-standing connections with Baptist House at Duke. Furman Hewitt was the first professor/director at Baptist House for ten years before retirement; Hardy Clemons was a member of the Board of Directors for several years.
