The Baptist World Alliance (BWA) is an organization of more than 200 Baptist conventions and associations around the world representing more than 100 million members of Baptist churches.  The headquarters of the BWA is in Falls Church, VA where General Secretary Neville Callam has his office.  There are six regional “fellowships” in North America, the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, Europe and Asia.

The BWA had its beginning in 1905 when the British Baptist Union invited Baptists from around the world to join them at their annual meeting.  Out of this meeting came the proposal to form a world-wide “alliance” which would meet every five years in a “Congress.”  In addition to fellowship, the BWA functions as a support for:   evangelism, leadership training, defense of human rights, aid to fight hunger and poverty and disease, and youth ministry.   (A Youth Conference is also held every five years, the next will be held in  2008  in Leipzig, Germany with many from FBC Greenville scheduled to attend.)

FBC Greenville has many connections with the BWA.  Dr. Duke McCall, father of our own Duke McCall, served as BWA president 1980-85;  F. Towley Lord of London, who attended FBC when teaching at Furman in the 1950s , was president 1950-55.  Many of our members have attend BWA Congresses, the latest being in Birmingham, England in 2005,  and  the BWA Youth Congresses.
